In Maths, we have been learning to use our basic addition and subtraction facts to help us solve harder problems. We are now using these to help us solve multiplication problems.
Kiko is engaging with his maths and is beginning to show her capability in solving tricky word problems. She is able to collaborate and explain her thinking with other learners around him. Kiko is now making connections of using the strategies we’ve learned like skip counting to help her solve multiplication problems.

Learners: Kiko & Vicky Habitat: LH1
Learning Coach: R. Moopanar Date: 26.10.17
|
Learning Area: iExplore - Sunsmart
Key Competency: Participating and Contributing
|
Learning Observed
|
This term our focus is on how we can be capable citizens. In order to launch this the learners participated in a capable iExplore on Being Sunsmart where they collaboratively explored and brainstormed ideas about what being sunsmart is all about. The lasting understanding from this iExplore was that we can be connected in a variety of ways and display these connections by predicting and processing what the steps are in beings sunsmart. It was great to see the learners supporting each other in being curious and deciding how to be sunsmart and hear them describe their ways of being sunsmart as an example of how we can recall and connect with others. All of the learners displayed their capabilities by working with a buddy on their own sunsmart presentation. The presentations can be found on the learner’s Google Drive.

In Physical Education this term our habitat have been learning about large ball skills such as: passing, catching, dribbling and shooting. These skills help us to play the game of softball. We know that we need to use our hands, legs and arms to help better our skills.
Kiko worked collaboratively with other learners in the game Golden Child. Each learner had to shoot the ball into the hoop to stop the other team from running around the court and scoring points. When shooting, Kiko has been practicing to use bend her knees and use her arms to shoot the ball into the hoop.

Learning Area: Social Studies Level One
Planning for practice
Outline a general plan to support the development of an outcome, identifying appropriate steps and resources.

|
Learning Observed
| |
In iExplore, our learners have opted into different areas to explore. Such as: Ormiston Market Day, Cultural Learning and Current Events and News. For Market Day, learners are exploring what products they could make to sell. As a group, they have to come up with their idea and how to pitch it. It is to be well designed and thought out.
Kiko is in a group designing slime to sell at the next Market Day. So far she has found a recipe using a chromebook that she thinks is a winner. She is working collaboratively with her group and shows capability in her designs so far. Kiko is being curious by finding out what other learners would be interested in buying. She is being connected by using what she has already created and sold at the last Ormiston Market Day to help further her learning.

Number strategies
Use a range of counting, grouping, and equal-sharing strategies with whole numbers and fractions.
Number knowledge
Know the forward and backward counting sequences of whole numbers to 100.
Know groupings with five, within ten, and with ten.

Learning Observed
| |
In Maths, we have been learning about number patterns and using skip counting to help us. We have been learning to skip counting in 5s to help us solve our five timetables. Our hapu have been learning that 4x5 is the same as 4 groups of 5 and what that looks like visually.
Kiko shows curiosity during discussions by listening carefully to others when they share their ideas. She is able to work collaboratively with others to help further her understanding and prefers peer buddy discussions. Kiko is beginning to show her capability by skip counting in fives to help her solve five timetable problems.

In writing, we have been learning about recounts. A recount is an event that is retold by a learner in their own words. We have been learnings lots about paragraphs and how to plan our ideas effectively. Kiko is beginning to build her sentences into paragraphs. She is capable by recognising that paragraphs have one main idea. Kiko works collaboratively by orally co-constructing sentences with other learners around her and listens carefully to others share their ideas. She is curious about gifted words and is beginning to make connections with her prior learning.
Kiko wrote about our school trip to the Fo Guan Shan temple in Flatbush. Here she is sharing her writing with us.

iDevelop: Kiko and Maths
Learner: Kiko
Date: 10.04.17
Learning Area: LH1
Learning Coach: Priscilla Lavakula
NZ Curriculum Achievement Objectives
Use simple additive strategies with whole numbers and fractionsKnow the basic and addition and subtraction facts
Learning Observed:
In maths we have been learning to solve word number problems. The exponents group have been learning to read and identify the most important parts of a word problem that will help them to solve it. The learners then, had to discuss what the problem was asking us to do ie. add, subtract, multiply or divide.
Key Competencies/ Vision Principles:
Kiko shows being curious and connected when modelling to and questioning during discussions that took place. She listens very carefully. Kiko shows capability by saying what kind of equation each word problem was and why.
Next Learning Steps:
Continue practicing your basic facts of addition and subtraction to 10
Continue learning on your Mathletics
